NOW POSTPONED TO SUNDAY 11th SEPTEMBER 2016
THAMES LITERARY DAY
Saturday 11 June
This will be a pick-and-choose event where you can join in with whichever aspects tickle your fancy. Central to the day will be a riverside bring-and-share Literary Picnic. Please bring along some food inspired by picnics and expedition food of literature and be prepared to talk about the book(s) it came from if others cannot identify the origin.
Beforehand take a stroll along the banks of the River Thames, sharing poems, quotations and anecdotes from literature inspired by or based around the Thames. Distance will be agreed nearer the time depending on the desires and abilities of participants.
After lunch (or indeed before if you choose not to walk) you can try for a little ‘messing about in boats’ (hire from Hobbs of Henley www.hobbsofhenley.com for approx £15 – £25 per hour, advance booking not available unfortunately).
Alternatively visit the River and Rowing Museum which, in addition to displays about the history of the Thames and the sport of rowing, has a charming telling of The Wind in the Willows in a series of walk-through tableaux. (At the time of going to press admission costs £9.50 adults and £7.50 for all concessions – www.rrm.co.uk).
What has this to do with Arthur Ransome, you may be wondering. Well there are a number of links to be made, so take up the challenge to see what you can find out and we’ll share our discoveries along with our picnic.
