“What was it like to sail the North Atlantic in a tiny wooden ship, destination unknown. In 1497 John Cabot and crew did l that very thing in 1497, leading to the discovery of what we now know as North America. In 1997 a replica of Cabot’s ship “The Matthew” commemorated that historic voyage by once again travelling the same route but this time knowing their end Port of call, Bonavista, New Foundland.
Mark Chislett, ship’s carpenter, Gunner and later shore Shore Captain, will be guest of Honour at our forthcoming AGM. In addition to anecdotes about this exciting and sometimes scary voyage, Mark will be showing video footage of the actual crossing, some previously unseen by the general public. Book your place early and don’t forget the seasick pills.”
